Basic Thai Phrases for Beginners

The most important Thai expressions for greetings, politeness, and everyday situations. Each phrase includes the Thai script, RTGS romanization, and English translation.

Thai uses politeness particles at the end of sentences: ครับ (khrâp) for male speakers and ค่ะ (khâ) for female speakers. Using them shows respect and is an essential part of Thai social etiquette.

Thai has no verb conjugation — context and time words indicate tense. There's also no grammatical gender. The main challenge for English speakers is the 5-tone system: the same syllable said with different pitch has a completely different meaning.

The good news: Thai grammar is much simpler than European languages. Once you learn the script and tones, you can make yourself understood quickly.

Using Thai Phrases Politely

Thai speakers often drop the subject and the verb "to be", so short sentences are perfectly natural. What matters more is the politeness particle at the end: ครับ (khrâp) for men and ค่ะ (khâ) for women. Women use คะ (khá) instead of ค่ะ for questions.

The phrase ไม่เป็นไร (mâi pen rai) is one of the most useful in Thailand: it means "it's okay", "no problem" or "never mind", and it reflects a relaxed approach to small inconveniences. A smile and a polite particle go a long way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ค่ะ and คะ?

Both are used by women. ค่ะ (khâ, falling tone) ends statements and answers, while คะ (khá, high tone) is used at the end of questions. Men use ครับ (khrâp) for everything.

How do you say hello in Thai?

Say สวัสดี (sawatdii) followed by ครับ (khrâp) if you are a man, or ค่ะ (khâ) if you are a woman. The same greeting works at any time of day and for both hello and goodbye.

How do you say thank you in Thai?

Say ขอบคุณ (khàwp khun) followed by ครับ or ค่ะ. To say thank you very much, add มาก (mâak): ขอบคุณมาก.

Do I need to learn the Thai script to speak Thai?

You can learn basic spoken phrases from romanization, but reading the Thai script helps you pronounce tones correctly and remember vocabulary. Romanization systems also vary from one source to another.
